![]() What are you hoping to observe with the telescope? Planets? DSOs (nebulae, galaxies, clusters)? I'm guessing the main draw of taking a scope into the backcountry would be for the dark skies, which would mean DSOs (planets don't really need a very dark sky for good viewing), but DSOs even with a dark sky you usually want as big of an objective size as you can get which pretty much rules out anything remotely ultralight. Let your eyes adjust to the darkness for around 20 minutes, no phone or flashlight or camp fire, and you will get an amazing view of the sky without any of the frustration of a device not working how you want it to. If you aren't willing to carry a telescope, my suggestion would be to not bring anything. The moon will likely be the limit of what will look good. Stability will be your other main problem, I would guess that you aren't planning on bringing a tripod to save weight, it will be difficult to keep what you want to view in frame if you are holding it in your hand. However, at night you need to gather as much light as you can to see any detail. The objective is the light gathering part of optics, lightweight spotting scopes are typically made for daytime hunting and nature watching so they can get away with having small objective lenses. The two main issues are going to be objective size and stability. ![]() r/Hammocks, /r/HammockCamping, and /r/ULHammockingĪs a former astrophysicist, anything that fits the ultralight definition is going to leave you disappointed if you use it for astronomy. ![]() Trail Specific Subs /r/PacificCrestTrail /r/AppalachianTrail /r/CDT /r/JMT Related Subsįor buying, selling, and trading ultralight backpacking gear.
